Centered on the theme “Crossing,” the 9th Miaoli Performing Arts Festival presents three program series—City Spotlight, Shop Fringe, and Arts Outreach—that connect theater, local businesses, and urban spaces to create immersive experiences that transcend both physical boundaries and sensory expectations. Running from June 24 to August 30, the festival brings together 11 performing groups to deliver more than 30 performances, urging visitors to explore the streets of Miaoli and discover the unique cultural charm of this mountain town.
Organized by EX-Theatre Asia, this year’s festival features a diverse lineup spanning theater, dance, contemporary circus, music, and interactive experiences. Performances extend beyond conventional theater venues into cafés, bookstores, farms, and other everyday spaces, showcasing the many ways that art can become part of people’s daily lives. The Arts Outreach series includes the free immersive interactive production Game Simulator: Let’s Play Together. The Shop Fringe series transforms distinctive local businesses in Sanyi, Tongxiao, and Yuanli into performance venues, enabling closer interactions between audiences and artists through the creative use of space. Meanwhile, the City Spotlight series, which will be launched in August, will feature several productions, including EX-Theatre Asia’s And...Siddhartha, highlighting the union of contemporary theater and local culture.
The Miaoli County Government noted that, entering into its ninth year, the Maoli Performing Arts Festival continues to draw upon the county’s cultural and artistic resources. Through a diverse program lineup and a range of promotional offers, the festival seeks to encourage more people to experience performing arts, deepen public participation in cultural activities, and strengthen the communities’ sense of urban identity.
